Prince of the apostles and rock of the Church — feast on June 29, with Saint Paul.
Saint Peter, a Galilean fisherman called Simon, was chosen by Christ as leader of the Twelve Apostles.
He confessed Jesus as Messiah and received the keys of the Kingdom, confirmed as the rock on which the Church is built.
He denied the Lord in the Passion, but was restored by Christ's love and shepherded the first Christians in Jerusalem.
Tradition holds he was martyred in Rome, crucified upside down. His chair symbolizes the unity of the Church.
His liturgical feast is June 29, together with Saint Paul. He is invoked for firm faith, obedience to the Pope, and strength of the Church.
