Saint Monica

Feast day: August 27

Mother persevering in prayer, whose tears and supplications obtained the conversion of Saint Augustine.

Saint Monica, painting by Benozzo Gozzoli

Monica was born around 331 in Tagaste, Roman Africa, into a Christian family. She married Patricius, a pagan, and had three children, including Augustine.

She lived long years of anguish over her son's dissolute life, praying and weeping unceasingly for his conversion.

She followed Augustine to Milan, where she met Saint Ambrose. Her persevering faith and prayer are narrated in Augustine's Confessions.

Shortly before dying at Ostia in 387, she saw Augustine converted and baptized. She died in peace, trusting in God's mercy.

Her liturgical feast is August 27. She is patroness of mothers and invoked for the conversion of children and family members.

Dedicated prayer

To the mother persevering in prayer, we ask grace for the conversion of children and peace in families.
