Saint José de Anchieta, Apostle of Brazil

Jose de Anchieta was born in the Canary Islands in 1534 and entered the Society of Jesus while young.

He arrived in Brazil in 1553, dedicating himself to catechizing indigenous peoples on the coast of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

He founded settlements, composed poems in Tupi, and wrote the first grammar of the language.

He lived penance, illness, and tireless zeal for evangelization.

He died in 1597. Canonized in 2014. His feast is June 9. He is invoked for missionaries and catechists.
