Saint John the Evangelist

Feast day: December 27

Beloved disciple and apostle of the Gospel — feast on December 27.

Saint John the Evangelist, painting by El Greco

Saint John, son of Zebedee and brother of James, was one of the Twelve Apostles and, according to tradition, the only one who did not die a martyr's death.

The Gospel calls him the beloved disciple: he rested on Jesus' breast at the Last Supper and received Mary's care from Christ on the cross.

Author of the fourth Gospel, the three Johannine letters, and Revelation, he witnessed Christ's divinity with mystical depth.

Exiled on Patmos, he lived in Ephesus and shepherded the Church to old age.

His liturgical feast is December 27. He is invoked for love of Christ, purity, and depth of faith.

Dedicated prayer

To the beloved disciple and apostle of the Gospel, we ask love for Christ, purity, and depth of faith.
