Jesuit martyr of India — feast on February 4.
John de Britto was born in Lisbon in 1647, of a noble family, and entered the Society of Jesus.
He missioned in India, adapting to local culture and living as the natives did.
He baptized many converts and defended Christians persecuted by local power.
He was beheaded in 1693 for refusing to renounce his faith and his converts.
Beatified in 1853 and canonized in 1947. His feast is February 4. He is invoked for missionaries.
