Queen of Silesia, widow devoted to the poor and peace among peoples.

Saint Hedwig of Silesia, queen of charity

Hedwig was born in 1174, daughter of Count Berthold IV of Andechs in Bavaria.

She married Henry I of Silesia and had seven children, devoting herself to their Christian education.

As a widow she took a penitential habit, founded Cistercian monasteries, and cared for the sick and poor.

She mediated political conflicts and promoted unity between Poles and Germans in Silesia.

She died on October 15, 1243. Canonized in 1267. Liturgical feast: July 17.
