Saint Gerard Majella was born in Muro Lucano, Italy, in 1726, and entered the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer as a lay brother.
He lived extraordinary humility, obedience, and charity, especially toward the poor, sick, and children.
He received mystical gifts and a reputation for holiness even in life; he died in 1755 at only 29 years of age.
Canonized in 1904, he became one of the most invoked saints for expectant mothers, childbirth, and families.
His liturgical feast is October 16. Devotion associates him with protection of motherhood and newborns throughout the Catholic world.
