Saint George

St. George is among the most popular saints in Christendom, though few precise historical details of his life have reached us. Tradition presents him as a Roman soldier of the third or fourth century, born in Cappadocia or Palestine.

According to ancient accounts, during Emperor Diocletian's persecution he refused to renounce the Christian faith and faced martyrdom with courage. His fidelity to Christ amid imperial power became a symbol of spiritual resistance.

The legend of the dragon — in which George saves a princess and frees a city from a terrible beast — arose in the Middle Ages as a parable of good's victory over evil, faith over fear. It is not historical report but profound devotional expression.

He is patron of England, Portugal (among other saints), soldiers, scouts, and countless cities worldwide. His image as a knight armed with faith has crossed centuries of sacred art.

In many countries, especially in Latin America and Europe, devotion to St. George is tied to protection, courage, and hope in difficult times.

His liturgical feast is celebrated on April 23. On that day, churches and communities pray for his intercession against all evil and for strength to remain faithful to Christ.
