Saint Frederick of Utrecht

Martyr bishop of the Netherlands, defender of ecclesiastical discipline.
Frederick was born around 780, possibly in Frisia.
He was ordained a priest and in 815 was appointed bishop of Utrecht.
He evangelized the Frisians and worked for moral reform among clergy and people.
He was murdered on July 18, 838, possibly by opponents of his pastoral authority.
He is venerated as a martyr in the Netherlands region. Liturgical feast: July 18.
