The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary proclaims that Mary, when the course of her earthly life was finished, was taken up body and soul into heavenly glory.
The dogma was solemnly defined by Pius XII on November 1, 1950, in the bull Munificentissimus Deus.
The feast draws on Eastern and Western Christian tradition and has been celebrated in the Roman calendar since the seventh century.
August 15 is a holy day of obligation in many countries and a central Marian feast in the liturgical year.
The Church invokes her as the glorified Mother and model of hope in the resurrection promised to the faithful.
Her liturgical feast is August 15. It is a solemnity of precept and widespread popular devotion in parishes and Marian shrines.
