Ignatian Examen of Conscience
Traditional examen of conscience by Saint Ignatius of Loyola — reviewing the day in the light of God's grace.
2 min read
I ask grace to know my sins, to repent of them, and to amend my life.
1. I thank God for the gifts received this day.
2. I ask the Holy Spirit for light to recognize where I failed and where I was faithful.
3. I review the day, hour by hour, observing thoughts, words, and actions — where I turned from God and where I found him.
4. I ask forgiveness for my faults and give thanks for the graces received.
5. I propose a concrete resolution for tomorrow.
Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will. All that I am and possess you have given me; to you, Lord, I return it with all my heart. Dispose of me according to your will. Amen.
When to pray
At the end of the day, before Compline or confession — a classic spiritual practice of Ignatian spirituality.
