Saints Cosmas and Damian

Twin brothers, physicians and martyrs — patrons of healthcare professionals.
Cosmas and Damian were born in Cilicia, Asia Minor, in the third century, sons of Christian saints. They practiced medicine freely, healing body and soul.
Known as the «unmercenary physicians,» they refused payment and proclaimed Christ to patients as the true physician of souls.
During Diocletian's persecution they were arrested, tortured, and martyred for refusing to renounce the Christian faith.
Tradition tells that when condemned, they asked three days to settle affairs and converted many in prison.
They were canonized as martyrs and venerated since antiquity throughout the Christian East and West.
Their liturgical feast is September 26. They are patrons of physicians, pharmacists, and surgeons.
