Saint Patrick

Feast day: March 17

Apostle of Ireland, missionary bishop of the fifth century.

Saint Patrick, painting by Briton Riviere

Patrick was born in Roman Britain around 385, son of a deacon and grandson of a priest.

Captured by Irish pirates in adolescence, he worked as a slave shepherd, where he discovered prayer.

He escaped and returned home, but heard in a dream the call to evangelize Ireland.

Ordained bishop, he returned to the island and preached the Gospel among pagan clans, founding churches and monasteries.

He used the shamrock to explain the Trinity and spread the faith that transformed Ireland.

He died on March 17, 461; his liturgical feast is March 17, patron of Ireland.

Dedicated prayer

To the apostle of Ireland, we ask perseverance in faith and intercession for missionaries.
