Saint Nicholas of Myra
Feast day: December 6
Bishop of Myra, patron of children, the poor, and sailors.
Nicholas was born in Patara, Lycia (modern Turkey), around 270, into a wealthy Christian family.
He lost his parents early and distributed his goods to the poor, living charity as a central expression of the Gospel.
He was elected bishop of Myra and, during Diocletian's persecutions, suffered imprisonment and exile for defending the faith.
He took part in the Council of Nicaea (325), defending Christ's divinity against Arianism.
Tradition tells of miracles aiding children, sailors in storms, and needy families.
He died on December 6, 343. His liturgical feast is December 6. He is patron of children, cooks, and sailors.
