Saint Matthew the Apostle

Feast day: September 21

Converted tax collector and evangelist — feast on September 21.

Saint Matthew the Evangelist inspired by an angel

Matthew, also called Levi, was a tax collector in Capernaum when Jesus called him.

He left the tax table and followed the Lord, becoming one of the Twelve Apostles.

Tradition holds that he wrote the Gospel bearing his name, addressed especially to Christians of Jewish origin.

He preached the Gospel and witnessed to the faith unto martyrdom, according to tradition.

His liturgical feast is September 21. He is invoked for conversion, fidelity to the Gospel, and detachment from riches.

Dedicated prayer

To the converted tax collector and evangelist, we ask grace of conversion and fidelity to the Gospel.
