Mary Magdalene, from the town of Magdala in Galilee, is among the most prominent followers of Jesus in the Gospels. Christian tradition honors her as the faithful disciple who remained at the foot of the cross.
On Easter morning, according to John's Gospel, she found the empty tomb and recognized the risen Lord — hence the title «apostle to the apostles.»
Scripture also presents her among the women who served Jesus and the disciples from their means, a sign of generosity and fidelity.
The Church distinguishes Mary Magdalene from other biblical figures sometimes confused in popular tradition over the centuries.
