Saint James the Less

Feast day: May 3

Apostle son of Alphaeus — feast on May 3 with Saint Philip.

Saint James the Less, painting by El Greco

Saint James the Less, son of Alphaeus, is one of the Twelve Apostles, distinct from Saint James the Greater.

Mentioned in the Gospels as a witness to the Resurrection and to Christ's life.

According to tradition, he preached in Palestine and suffered martyrdom for proclaiming the Gospel.

In iconography, he is depicted with a fuller's club — the instrument of his martyrdom.

His liturgical feast is May 3, with Saint Philip. He is invoked for humility and apostolic fidelity.
