Fifth-century Pope, defender of Roman authority and ecclesiastical discipline.
Innocent I was elected Pope around 401 and led the Church in difficult times.
He defended the primacy of the See of Rome in matters of faith and discipline.
He combated heresies and supported Saint John Chrysostom in his exile.
He strengthened the Roman liturgy and diocesan organization.
He died on March 12, 417. Liturgical feast: July 28.
