Saint Hildegard of Bingen

Hildegard was born in Bermersheim, Rhineland, around 1098, and was offered to the Church as a child.

She became abbess of Disibodenberg monastery and later founded Rupertsberg, where she received prophetic visions recorded in theological works.

She wrote on theology, natural medicine, liturgical music, and cosmology; she composed Gregorian chants and corresponded with popes and emperors.

She advocated monastic reform, denounced ecclesiastical corruption, and promoted the dignity of creation as a reflection of divine wisdom.

She died on September 17, 1179, over eighty years old, leaving a vast spiritual and intellectual legacy.

Beatified in 1326, she was declared a Doctor of the Church in 2012 by Benedict XVI. Her liturgical feast is September 17.
