Saint Francis of Assisi

Franciscan founder, lover of poverty and creation, model of peace and evangelical joy.

Francis was born in Assisi, Italy, around 1181. After a prosperous youth, he renounced wealth to follow the poor and crucified Christ.

He founded the Order of Friars Minor and inspired countless souls to live the Gospel simply. He received the stigmata in 1224.

His prayer for peace expresses the desire to be God's instrument in the world — even though the text emerged centuries after his death.
