Saint Dominic de Guzmán

Feast day: August 8

Founder of the Order of Preachers and apostle of the Holy Rosary.

Saint Dominic, founder of the Dominicans

Dominic de Guzmán was born in Caleruega, Spain, around 1170, into a noble family.

He became a canon regular and devoted himself to converting heretics in southern France.

He founded the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) in 1216, combining contemplative life and itinerant preaching.

Tradition attributes to him the spread of the Rosary as meditation on the mysteries of Christ and Mary.

He established study convents that formed great theologians and saints of the Church.

He died on August 6, 1221. Canonized in 1234. His liturgical feast is August 8.
