Saint Charbel Makhlouf, Maronite monk of Lebanon

Youssef Antoun Makhlouf was born on May 8, 1828, in Bekaa Kafra, Lebanon, in a Maronite family.

He entered the Maronite order and took the name Charbel in honor of a 2nd-century martyr.

He lived as a hermit at the Annaya monastery in rigorous prayer, penance, and manual labor.

He died on December 24, 1898. After his death, his tomb became a center of many graces and pilgrimages.

Beatified in 1965 and canonized in 1977 by Paul VI. Liturgical feast: July 24.
