Saint Augustine

Doctor of the Church and father of Western theology, converted by grace and his mother Monica's prayers.
Augustine was born on November 13, 354, in Tagaste, Roman Africa. Intelligent and restless, he sought truth in various philosophical currents before finding Christ.
He lived years of worldly life in Carthage and then Milan, where Saint Ambrose's preaching and his mother Monica's prayers opened his heart to grace.
He converted in 386, was baptized by Ambrose in 387, and ordained a priest in 391. He became bishop of Hippo in 395.
His works — especially the Confessions and The City of God — shaped Western theology. He was declared a Doctor of the Church.
He died on August 28, 430, during the Vandal siege of Hippo. His liturgical feast is August 28. He is invoked for conversion, wisdom, and love of truth.
