Why is St. Andrew patron of Scotland and other nations?

Tradition points to his preaching in Scotland and his death on the cross at Patras; he is invoked as a model of the missionary disciple.

Apostle of Christ, brother of Saint Peter, the first disciple called by the Lord.

Andrew, a Galilean fisherman, was brother of Simon Peter and a disciple of John the Baptist before following Jesus.

He was the first apostle called; he brought his brother Peter to the Lord saying, «We have found the Messiah.»

He preached the Gospel in the Black Sea region and, according to tradition, in Scotland and other lands.

He died martyred on the cross at Patras, Greece, around the year 60.

His liturgical feast is November 30. He is patron of Scotland, Russia, and Romania, and a model of the missionary disciple.
