Saint Alphonsus Liguori

Doctor of the Church, founder of the Redemptorists, and model confessor and zealot for souls.
Alphonsus Mary Liguori was born on September 27, 1696, in Marianella, near Naples, Italy. He studied law and theology, becoming a lawyer before ordination.
He dedicated himself to popular missions and confession, with special care for the poor and abandoned.
In 1732 he founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer — the Redemptorists — and was named bishop of Sant'Agata de' Goti in 1762.
Author of many spiritual works, including «The Glories of Mary» and treatises on Christian moral life. Declared Doctor of the Church in 1871.
He died on August 1, 1787. His liturgical feast is August 1. He is invoked by confessors, for conversion, and for zeal in the salvation of souls.
