Our Lady of Chiquinquirá

Patroness of Colombia — Marian image miraculously restored in 1586.
The image of Our Lady of the Rosary of Chiquinquirá was painted in 1560 on cotton cloth by Alonso de Narváez for the chapel at Suta, Colombia.
Over time the canvas deteriorated almost beyond recognition, but on December 26, 1586, it was miraculously restored before devotee Isabel de Velasco.
The miracle drew crowds and the image was transferred to Chiquinquirá, where a shrine was built.
She was declared patroness of the Provinces of Vélez and Santa Marta in 1829, and national patroness of Colombia in 1919.
Pope Pius XII crowned the image in 1944, and John Paul II visited the shrine in 1986.
Her liturgical feast is July 9. She is patroness of Colombia and symbol of national peace and unity.
