Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Feast day: September 8

Feast of the birth of the Virgin Mary, Mother of the Savior, celebrated on September 8.

Birth of the Virgin Mary, painting by Murillo

The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary celebrates Mary's birth, prepared by God to be Mother of the Savior.

Tradition names her parents as Saints Joachim and Anne, venerated in the liturgy on July 26.

The Gospel does not narrate Mary's birth, but the Church has celebrated it since the Middle Ages, especially in the Christian East.

The feast spread to the West and was fixed on September 8, nine months after the Immaculate Conception (December 8).

The celebration honors the Mother of God and recalls that salvation began to be prepared in a faithful family.

Her liturgical feast is September 8, a day of great Marian devotion in parishes and shrines.
